Frauth was first born in a studio apartment in Manhattan in 2017. Prior to that, I primarily enjoyed matcha at my obaachan’s home. She routinely brought back matcha, sencha and all kinds of Japanese tea when she visited family in Japan and she’d store it in her New Jersey freezer. She would tell me that the tea you could buy in America just “wasn’t the same”.
Meanwhile, matcha was becoming more and more popular outside of Japan and the cafes all over New York City began offering rainbow lattes, matcha with CBD added to it and more. I’ll try anything once (or twice) and after consuming my fair share of purple haze matcha lattes and “ceremonial” grade concoctions, I finally understood that the matcha outside of Japan was, as obaachan said, just not the same.
I was raised drinking matcha as a little girl–we’d end every meal with freshly whisked matcha and good conversation but it never became part of my own ritual until the pandemic hit and I was no longer able to enjoy obaachan’s perfectly prepared tea. It was during this time that I set out to find matcha that compared to the matcha from obaachan’s freezer.
I tried hundreds of the various matcha brands available online and in stores to no avail. Even the most popular brands in the US selling supposed ceremonial grade matcha were offering gritty, dull and bitter matcha. I also slowly started to realize that Japanese owned matcha brands in the US were few and far between.
All of our matcha is of obaachan approved quality, single cultivar, first harvest, grown on multigenerational family farms in regions beyond just Uji (where most brands source their matcha). At Frauth, we guarantee true Japanese matcha for maximum enjoyment and health benefits too.
